Gnomes are a playable race in World of Warcraft. They are a part of the alliance (so on the side of humans and dwarfs and night elves and suchlike). Generally they make good magicians, particularly mages and warlocks and rubbish fighters because they can only reach up to the knees of some of their adversaries. Well that is a bit of an exaggeration since Warcraft gnomes are larger than your average gnome, about four feet high I would guess.
If you start playing a gnome character in World of Warcraft then you will start off in Gnomeregan, the gnome homeworld which has been overtaken by the Troggs. These Troggs are an evil race of monsters and not to be confused with the rock band of the same name who’s single Wild Thing got to number two in the UK charts in 1966. Arriving as you do as a level 1 gnome in Gnomeregan you are introduced to the Survivor Assistance Facilitation expedition (SAFE) whose set you to the task of killing off a bunch of Crazed Leper gnomes who are running amok in the place. After a few more tasks including teleporting survivors out of the battle zone and getting yourself decontaminated you can leave (the radioactive) Gnomeregan and arrive at New Tinkertown. Gnomes like tinkering and making things and there is a lot of the steampunk in the Warcraft gnomes. In New Tinkertown you get to meet the boss of the gnomes, the High Tinker Mekkatorque and various other inhabitants such as Engineer Grindspark who sends you out to get parts for him to make new bots for operation Gnomeregan with.
Operation Gnomeregan is the long term plan to recapture and repair the gnome homeland. World of Warcraft was released in 2005 and up to 2018 the gnomes had not made much progress with getting their homeland back although there are grumbles of discontent about this with gnome players wanting the chance to put things right. Having made yourself useful in New Tinkertown for a while you get to go to Ironforge airport where you have to put out a few fires, kill a few invaders and arrest an ambassador. From Ironforge you can pretty much do what you want although the plot tends to take you to Gol Bolar Quarry and on to Loch Modan where my free account hit level 20.
